Indiantown Gap National Cemetery Memorial Council

YEARLY  CALENDAR

This page revised March 15, 2017

January

The Memorial Council Regular Monthly Meeting is on the Second Saturday of the Month at 9:30 a.m. in the National Cemetery's Administration Building.  The general public is invited to attend.  Veteran Service Organizations (VSO's) are strongly encouraged to send a representative to attend these meetings.

The Memorial Council participates in the Wreaths Across America "After Holiday Clean Sweep" project to clear the National Cemetery of the Wreaths and holiday decorations placed on the graves during the November and December holidays.  This event is usually on a Saturday morning in January or February or as late as March.  The Chairman of the Avenue of Flags Committee sends out an email to alert the Memorial Council members and registered volunteers of the date.  On the selected date, the Volunteers meet at the PA Veterans Memorial around 8:30 a.m. and bring with them snow shovels, sleds, toboggans, disc sleds or poles.  Snow shovels and poles are used to carry out wreaths by sliding the wreaths down the handle or on the pole.  The sleds and such are used to carry out wreaths and other decorations.  All the decorations removed from the graves are piled along the lane and the National Cemetery grounds crew load them into their small trucks.  This task takes about 2 hours but saves weeks of work for the employees of the National Cemetery grounds crew.

The Avenue of Flags presentation is set-up on the first Saturday in May at 8:00 a.m.  The setting up of the Avenue of Flags (Flags Up) is a “rain or shine” work detail and takes about 2 hours.  Volunteers must be at least 13 years old and drivers are to park at the parking lot of the PA Veterans Memorial.  This presentation is on display from the initial set-up in May until after Veterans Day in November.  If you have an interment flag (a casket flag received at a funeral), you may donate that flag to the National Cemetery to be flown on the Avenue of Flags.  Email Bob Hauser (marinedadbob@yahoo.com) for more information.

The Spring Sweep event is similar to the January event of clearing the National Cemetery of holiday decorations.  This event is tentative and is scheduled if the Easter holiday falls before the first Saturday in May.  The purpose is to clear the National Cemetery of flowers that are wilted or have been eaten by the deer.  The bulbs of the traditional Easter Holiday flowers are salvaged and replanted in the Memorial Garden adjacent to the PA Veterans Memorial.  Those flowers bought and brought by the families no longer are sent to the landfill, they are replanted so others may enjoy their beauty in the following years to come.

The Memorial Day Program is held at the PA Veterans Memorial on the Sunday before Memorial Day at 2:00 p.m. - rain or shine.  Parking is on the parking lot of the Community Club on the Fort Indiantown Gap Military Reservation (the Base) and the Memorial Council will provide shuttle-bus transportation for patrons attending the ceremony.  There is very limited handicapped parking on the parking lot adjacent to the Pennsylvania Memorial.  Handicapped visitors using that lot can catch a ride from their parked car to the Memorial's plaza in a golf cart provided by the National Cemetery.

June

The Memorial Council's Annual Meeting is on the Second Saturday of the Month in June at 9:30 a.m. in the National Cemetery's Administration Building.  Along with the regular business of the Memorial Council, the members present cast their vote for the four nominees to be the elected officers of the Memorial Council.  The term of the offices of President, Vice President, Secretary and Treasurer is for 12 months and an incumbent may run for re-election.  Any dues paid member may be nominated for an office at the June Annual Meeting.  The voting is done by secret ballot with the results announced directly after the count during the meeting.  The general public is invited to attend.  Veteran Service Organizations (VSO's) are strongly encouraged to send a representative to attend these meetings.

The Wreaths Across America program for 2017 is scheduled for December 16, 2017, the third Saturday of December, and is presented at the PA Veterans Memorial at noon.  Though the Memorial Council does not sponsor the Wreaths Across America program, it does support it and commends the efforts of the organizers and the volunteers and encourages all Memorial Council members and registered volunteers to participate.  The Wreaths Across America program begins with a meaningful ceremony and then the volunteers place thousands of wreaths on the headstones in designated sections of the Indiantown Gap National Cemetery.

The Holiday Candlelight Service is presented at the PA Veterans Memorial at 4:30 p.m on the third Saturday in December following the Wreaths Across America Event.   There is free parking available in the large lot adjacent to the Memorial for the patrons who attend this free event.  The weather, obviously, will be cold and patrons are encouraged to dress appropriately for the hour long program.  The Memorial Council will provide the chemical glow-sticks to be used as the "candles" for the program.  A Color Guard will present the Colors and a local choir will provide appropriate musical selections for the program.  Patrons are invited to the microphone to offer a brief remembrance of a loved one who served in the military.  It is recommended you bring your own chair and blankets.  The granite benches will be quite cold to sit upon.
